Multiplication and Facts to 10Unit 1: An introduction to the idea of multiplication as a way to count objects that are arranged in equal sets, and then concentrates on developing fluency with basic multiplication facts from 0 × 0 to 10 × 10. The commutative property and the relationship between multiplication and division are covered along the way. Multiplication Facts 11 and 12, Multiplication AlgorithmUnit 2: Multiplication facts with 11s and 12s are used as a springboard to introduce the distributive property. This, combined with knowledge of how to multiply multiples of 10 or 100, is then used to develop and practice the algorithm for multiplying larger numbers. Estimation with multiplication is also covered. Whole Number DivisionUnit 3: After reviewing the relationship between division and multiplication, this unit explains the long division algorithm, and then goes on to discuss estimation, divisibility, factors and multiples, and how fractions are related to both multiplication and division. FractionsUnit 4: Introduces students to fractions through pictorial models and addresses related topics, including fraction equivalence, comparison, estimation, and the connection between fractions and division.
Decimals and FractionsUnit 5: Students learn the meaning of decimals as an extension of place value and their relationship to fractions in denoting quantities less than a whole. They apply this knowledge in comparing, ordering, rounding, and estimating decimals. Adding and Subtracting Fractions and DecimalsUnit 6: In the first part, students add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators and mixed numbers. In the second part, students add and subtract decimals. Both parts cover estimation, and the unit concludes with the connection between operations on fractions and operations on decimals. Multiplication and Division of Fractions and DecimalsUnit 7: Students learn about the various strategies and techniques used to multiply and divide by fractions and decimals. The unit concludes with an application: the number pi and the techniques developed to multiply by decimals are used to find the circumference and area of a circle and the volume of a cylinder. 2-D Shapes and TransformationsUnit 8: A collection of lessons on elementary geometry: the basic building blocks (points, lines, angles, and so on), common shapes and their properties, congruence and similarity, line symmetry, transformations, and the rudiments of area on the plane.
2-D Shapes and AreaUnit 9: Students learn to measure area with unit squares, then extend their knowledge to calculating area of various common shapes using multiplication, as well as finding area from implied information. 3-D Shapes including Surface Area and VolumeUnit 10: Students learn about the types of 3-D solids and how to calculate surface area of prisms, and then go on to calculate volumes of cubes, prisms, and more complicated single and composite solids, as well as learning strategies for estimating volume.
