Understanding Whole Numbers to 10Unit 1: Introduction to numbers, numerals, and sets. Students count, compare, and order sets; join and separate sets of 20 or less; and learn quick recognition of numbers and numerals. Shapes and SpaceUnit 2: Students learn names and descriptions of shapes and solids and examples of both in the real world. They understand how to describe orientation and position, compare shapes to determine whether or not they are the same size, and explore composition and decomposition of shapes. Comparing Lengths and TimeUnit 3: Students learn about measurable attributes of space and time and direct and indirect methods to measure, compare, and sequence them. Understanding Basic Addition and Subtraction: Facts to 18Unit 4: Students use a variety of models to learn basic addition and subtraction facts through 18, the commutative and associative properties, and the relationship between the two operations.
Place Value: Ones and TensUnit 5: Students learn counting patterns through 100, place value to the tens place, use of the number line, greater than and less than, comparison of tens and number ordering. Pieces of ShapesUnit 6: Students use composition and decomposition to learn about the properties of shapes and solids, including the concepts of congruence and symmetry. Understanding Numbers to 1000Unit 7: Students learn about place value for numbers through 1000 and use this knowledge to compose, decompose, compare and order whole numbers. They then extend these ideas to numbers with four to six digits. Addition and Subtraction of Multi-Digit NumbersUnit 8: Builds on basic addition and subtraction skills to show how to add and subtract larger numbers, both without and with regrouping. Also introduces estimation as a tool for verifying accuracy of answers, and lays the groundwork for multiplication of numbers.
Linear MeasurementUnit 9: Students develop fluency with measuring length using standard and non-standard units, and solve problems involving measuring length. Multiplication and Facts to 10Unit 10: An introduction to the idea of multiplication as a way to count objects that are arranged in equal sets, and then concentrates on developing fluency with basic multiplication facts from 0 × 0 to 10 × 10. The commutative property and the relationship between multiplication and division are covered along the way. FractionsUnit 11: Introduces students to fractions through pictorial models and addresses related topics, including fraction equivalence, comparison, estimation, and the connection between fractions and division. 2-D Shapes and TransformationsUnit 12: A collection of lessons on elementary geometry: the basic building blocks (points, lines, angles, and so on), common shapes and their properties, congruence and similarity, line symmetry, transformations, and the rudiments of area on the plane.
Multiplication Facts 11 and 12, Multiplication AlgorithmUnit 13: Multiplication facts with 11s and 12s are used as a springboard to introduce the distributive property. This, combined with knowledge of how to multiply multiples of 10 or 100, is then used to develop and practice the algorithm for multiplying larger numbers. Estimation with multiplication is also covered. Decimals and FractionsUnit 14: Students learn the meaning of decimals as an extension of place value and their relationship to fractions in denoting quantities less than a whole. They apply this knowledge in comparing, ordering, rounding, and estimating decimals. 2-D Shapes and AreaUnit 15: Students learn to measure area with unit squares, then extend their knowledge to calculating area of various common shapes using multiplication, as well as finding area from implied information. Whole Number DivisionUnit 16: After reviewing the relationship between division and multiplication, this unit explains the long division algorithm, and then goes on to discuss estimation, divisibility, factors and multiples, and how fractions are related to both multiplication and division.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions and DecimalsUnit 17: In the first part, students add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators and mixed numbers. In the second part, students add and subtract decimals. Both parts cover estimation, and the unit concludes with the connection between operations on fractions and operations on decimals. 3-D Shapes including Surface Area and VolumeUnit 18: Students learn about the types of 3-D solids and how to calculate surface area of prisms, and then go on to calculate volumes of cubes, prisms, and more complicated single and composite solids, as well as learning strategies for estimating volume. Multiplication and Division of Fractions and DecimalsUnit 19: Students learn about the various strategies and techniques used to multiply and divide by fractions and decimals. The unit concludes with an application: the number pi and the techniques developed to multiply by decimals are used to find the circumference and area of a circle and the volume of a cylinder.
