Portland, Ore. – Building on the success of its inaugural Code-a-Thon in 2016, Learning.com today announced registration for the 2017 competition is now open until November 6. The contest will run from November 13-17, providing an engaging introduction to coding for elementary and middle school students. The grand prize winner will receive 20 Chromebooks for their school and a free year-long subscription to EasyTech and EasyCode.

More than 250,000 students from 1,700 schools competed in last year’s Code-a-Thon. North Heights Junior High School in Texarkana, Arkansas, was the national winner of the 2016 competition. Due to the overwhelming response to the contest, Learning.com also awarded regional winners from across the country.

“Developing computational thinking skills and coding proficiency, as early as elementary school, accelerates students’ progress on the path to success in today’s digital world,” said Learning.com CEO Keith Oelrich. “Our Code-a-Thon contest provides a great way for teachers to engage their students with coding concepts even if they don’t have any prior experience teaching coding.”

To participate in the contest, teachers simply need to register their class to receive free access to EasyCode. During the registration process, they will choose one of two solutions available during the Code-a-Thon–EasyCode Foundations, which is a game-based introduction to coding recommended for elementary school students, or EasyCode Pillars, which is an interactive curriculum to help middle school students learn key coding principles using Python. Students will earn points for progressing through the lessons during the week of November 13-17, and for every 100 points earned, each class will receive one entry into the random drawing. There will be one grand prize winner and two runners up randomly drawn from the participants.

Schools are also encouraged to use #codeathon2017 on social media to share their progress and interact with other participants. To register for the contest, please visit www.learning.com/code-a-thon.
