Photography Month
Focus your students on Photography Month this May by discovering the fun and function of picture-taking. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
Have students bring a favorite photograph to class and discover the possibilities of digital enhancement. For digital photographs, have students practice transferring the image from their data storage device to the classroom computer. For printed photographs, practice using the scanner. When the photographs are on the computer, have students open them in Graphics software and have fun "enhancing" the photo with their own digital drawing and text.

Grades 3-5
Discover how photographs can be used to enhance other hobbies and interests. Have students choose a favorite hobby and take photographs of different aspects of it (the equipment, the steps, the outcome, the location, them doing it, etc.). For students who don't have access to a digital camera, have them use a school camera to photograph a hobby within the school (such as reading or sports). Then have students use Word Processing software to combine their images with text to teach other students about their chosen activity. Show students how formatting within the document can bring the words and images together in a clear and informative manner.

Grades 6-8
As a class, explore several photo-sharing Web sites. Discuss the different features and benefits of each, including how comments and blogging create a dialogue and community among users. Then create a class photo Web site, focusing on a chosen topic (such as a special class event, theme, or lesson). As a class, decide what layout and features will make your site the best. Have one group of students take photographs and another create a Web site through which to share them with other students or their families.
