Independence Day
Help students discover the history, the science, and the culture behind the fun and fireworks of the 4th of July. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
As a class, look at pictures, video clips, books, and art about fireworks. Then have students work together to make a fireworks display of their own. Using Graphics software, have students create a picture of fireworks. Encourage students to use various colors and shapes in their art. Each student should save and print his/her work. Hang all the students' work on a bulletin board and discuss how the graphical representations differ from real firework displays.

Grades 3-5
Split students into two groups: past and present. Have the students in the "Past" group use the Web for research and create a multimedia presentation about the history of Independence Day. The presentation should include basic information, a timeline, a map, images, and more. Have the "Present" group use the Web for research and create a presentation about one of the key elements in a present-day Fourth of July celebration: fireworks. The presentation should explain how fireworks work and should include interesting facts, images, and more.

Grades 6-8
Have students use the Web to read the Declaration of Independence, research its creation, and review its sections and language. Then have them use Word Processing software to write a document of their own, following the same format as the original, to declare independence from something — a fear, hang-up, or issue that they think is holding them back.
