Garden Month
Dig into springtime and explore the biology, beauty and fun of gardening by celebrating National Garden Month with your students this April! Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
As a class, brainstorm a list of different plants they do/would plant in their gardens at home. The list should include flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, trees, etc. Then have students use Visual Mapping software to organize the list into categories that make sense to them (color, type of plant, etc.). Have students consider, and note on their visual maps, what the different groups have in common and how they differ.

Grades 3-5
Have each student select a plant that they do/would grow in their gardens. Using the Web, have students research specific information about their plants (scientific name, classification, where it grows, ideal growing conditions, etc.) as well as general information about plants and gardening (including soil improvement, photosynthesis). Then have students create a multimedia presentation about their plants, presenting the information from their research as well as photographs/diagrams/maps. Have students share their presentations with the class.

Grades 6-8
Gardening is a great hands-on classroom activity! As students dig in and have fun, they’ll learn about biology and math and will discover how technology can be used to improve even this ages-old outdoor activity. As a class, plan, implement, and investigate a class plant garden. Have students use the Web to research the types of plants that would grow well in their setting. Use Graphing software to diagram the garden, making plans based on the size of the garden and the sizes of proposed plants. As plants grow, use Spreadsheet software to keep track of data, including height, color, number of leaves, etc. Create Graphs from the spreadsheets to organize and compare information. You could even have students create a Classroom Garden Web site to post and share relevant information and pictures
