Bike Month
May is National Bike Month so get students geared up with these fun activities. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
Read the class some books about learning to ride a bike, like Curious George Rides a Bike and D.W. Rides Again. As a class, discuss some common themes and plot elements, such as the importance of practice and trying again after falls. Then have the students write the story of when they learned to ride a bike, using Word Processing software to write the words and Graphics software to make an accompanying picture.

Grades 3-5
Have students use Word Processing software to create a bike-themed crossword puzzle. Students should use a Table within their document to format the puzzle, and should use the Web to research interesting words and clues related to the history, physics, parts, maintenance, and safety of bicycling. When they’re finished, have students swap and share puzzles with their classmates (using the Web again to help answer tricky clues).

Grades 6-8
Have students create a "Bike Safety" presentation to share with a younger class. First, have students use the Web to research different laws, guidelines, and equipment related to bicycle safety. Then have them use Presentation software to create a multimedia presentation that will teach younger riders about bike safety. Instruct students to consider their audience when creating the presentation, and to use creativity and graphics to make the presentation interesting. Visit a younger grade to share the students' presentations.
