Fall Hat Month

As summer comes to an end, it’s time to put away the sun visors and floppy hats and gear up for fall weather! Get into autumn style with Fall Hat Month this September. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.

Grades K-2
Have students use Graphics software to draw two pictures of themselves, one in summer and one in fall. Have students pay particular attention to their attire, including head-wear. When students are finished, have them print and share their designs, discussing what they like and look forward to about fall.

Grades 3-5
Give students the task of launching their own fall hat online store. Have each student browse the Web and select 5 of their favorite current fall hat styles. Have them save the pictures and write descritions. Then have each student add the picture, a title and the description into a class spreadsheet. (In a separate, private spreadsheet, keep track of which student added each picture.) Once all the photos and descriptions are added to the spreadsheet, have students use a new row in the spreadsheet to vote on their two favorite styles. Once all the votes are cast, review the spreadsheet as a class. What styles were most/least popular? What do they have in common? Which students had chosen the most popular styles? Use graphing functions to graph top trends in the voting results.

Grades 6-8
Have students create an (offline) fall fashion blog! First have students surf the Web to find fall hats and other fashions they like. Have them save pictures and write marketing copy for their selections. Then have them use Word Processing software to insert the pictures and descriptions, and save the files in a central location. Have students open each others’ documents, and add their own comments and questions to the document to create a dialogue. Encourage students to have fun, but to remember the ethics and class/school guidelines for online communication.
