National Dog Week
Celebrate man’s (and boy’s and girl’s) best friend with National Dog Week, the fourth week of September. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
Create a database of basic dog information, including name, type/group, size, coat length, activity level, picture, etc. (About Dogs and Next Day Pets Web sites should be helpful resources). As a class, discuss how the database works, and how it can be browsed, sorted, searched and used to find and organize information. Then have each student use the database to find the answers to specific questions, such as “Which dogs are small sized?” “How many hounds are in the list?” and “What dogs are both large and long-haired?”

Grades 3-5
Have each student choose a breed of dog and create a multimedia presentation. But the presentation should be from the voice of the dog itself, and should serve as an adoption profile, with the “dog” sharing information about itself in order to find a good adoptive family. Students should use the Web for research on their breed and should include pictures, breed information, basic characteristics, and more in their presentations.

Grades 6-8
Work together as a class to create a “National Dog Week” newsletter. Assign each student an item to be included in the newsletter (pictures, jokes, articles, Q & A, table of top breeds, adoption profile, etc.). Have students use the Web for research as necessary, and use appropriate software (Word Processing, Graphics, etc.) to create their piece. Assign a small group of students to put the information together into newsletter format and distribute it to their classmates.
