Caroling
Get students into the holiday spirit by discovering the history and worldwide appeal of holiday caroling. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
Help students practice keyboarding skills by playing a holiday caroling version of “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” Divide students into groups, and put them in different sections of the classroom. Tell them they are “families” and are in their “houses.” Be a caroler and go to each house. Begin singing a song, but stop mid-lyric. Have the “family” choose one person to rush to the computer and type the next line of the song. Go to each “house” a few times, and then encourage the families to go caroling at each other’s houses.

Grades 3-5
Have students use the Web to research the history and changing nature of holiday caroling, from its roots in feudal society to today. Then have students plan a new phase in the history of caroling, that would work better in today’s world (recognizing modern lifestyles, incorporating modern ideologies, etc.). Students should use Word Processing software to write a synopsis of their modern caroling plan, and should write a holiday carol they feel is reflective of their idea. Students should pay particular attention to formatting in their documents.

Grades 6-8
Though most often associated with Christmas, caroling has a history that is not associated with any particular holiday. Assign each student a holiday (including those from various cultures) and have them use the Web to find a song associated with, or related to, that holiday. Each student should make a simple Web page, including their holiday, the lyrics to the song, and any additional information or images. Compile each Web page into a “Holiday Song” site, with a home page from which they are linked.
